3 - ASH WEDNESDAY

ASH WEDNESDAY 2026 with the imposition of ashes

  • It marks the beginning of the Season of Lent.
  • It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption [i.e. obtain salvation – deliverance from sin & death].

We are marked with ashes to show that we are willing to change. The ashes remind us to turn our hearts toward God and of our call to repent and believe in the Gospel.

The Church gives us Lent as a time to change, to become a better version of ourselves, and to become more like Jesus. The disciplines of Lent—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—help us prepare for Christ’s victory on Easter.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics.  In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
